Simple Design Changes Can Assist New Zealanders with Dementia

Approximately 83,000 New Zealanders are currently living with dementia. Despite increased awareness, many homes are not suitable for those affected by the condition.

Home environments play a significant role in supporting individuals with dementia. Current building practices often overlook the specific needs of these individuals, which can affect their safety and quality of life.

Simple design changes, such as improved lighting and clear signage, can make a significant impact. These modifications help create spaces that allow for better navigation and comfort for those living with dementia.

As awareness grows and retrofit programmes evolve, there is an opportunity for more homes to be adapted to support this demographic. This can lead to enhanced wellbeing and independence for people facing dementia challenges.
